11 Aug – La Spezia

Drove for ages today. Didn't drive very far but it was all windy roads through the mountains so it took a while. Some really nice coastal views along here. The outskirts of Genoa also looked a lot nicer than the main city.

We passed through La Spezia, aiming to try and stay in the small outskirt town Portovenere. It was packed. Seems it must have the only beaches for 100 miles, since there were cars parked everywhere and not a free space to be seen. Didn't even get a chance to check any hotels. We headed back to La Spezia, parked the car, and then went for lunch. Got some rolls and then went looking for a hotel. There were some signs up for hotels, but we couldn't find them. The hotels listed on the GPS were also invisible. We finally went to the Jolly Hotel (we've seen a few of them in different cities) but it was expensive, so we continued to wander. Finally found the Hotel Astra. No triple rooms available so had to settle for a double and a single. My room is small and basic. No full bathroom, but I do have a bidet 6 inches from my pillow. Woo!

Dinner was another search, as everywhere seemed closed. Ended up at a little place near the water (by near I mean with a large shipyard in between). We all got the mixed grill, which seemed to be pretty much different types of pork. Filled us up pretty well, so we headed back for an early night ready for tomorrows attack of the Cinque Terre.

Oh, I've also notices that Nutella is everywhere here. I've seen Nutella Crepes and big piles of Nutella in the supermarkets. Those nutty Italians...man I'm funny.

Signing off...
